3 Advantages of Creating Natural Skincare Formulas from Scratch

Even natural skincare brands sometimes begin with a base or blend purchased from another company. However, there are clear benefits to the brand and the customer of building the formula one ingredient at a time.

Types of blends used in skincare include essential oil blends (natural), fragrance blends (synthetic) and lotion, soap, or other bases (natural or synthetic).

Originality
A natural skincare formula a brand develops by trial and error using individual plant-based ingredients results in a unique product with its own texture and scent. The use of a pre-mixed blend can work very well and save time but that base or fragrance isn’t necessarily exclusive to that brand and could be found in many other products.

Quality control
The brand has complete control over the specific ingredients used, their source, and the exact proportions. This level of confidence and control is lessened when using a base or blend.

Transparency
Most US natural brands disclose every skincare ingredient on the website (optional) and product labels (required) so individuals know what they are putting on their skin. If there is reference made to a blend of oils or fragrance, then it is harder to determine exactly what is in the product and confirm it is natural.

Upcycle Your Skincare Containers

May 04, 2021

What is Upcycling?
Upcycling creates less trash by reusing and transforming the containers and other things you already have. Brilliant! The examples below save you money and if your items are biodegradable at least they don’t end up floating in the ocean.
  • use old fabric and towels as drop cloths or rags
  • reuse paper in packages you receive for future packages you ship
  • get a refill on liquid products
  • repurpose skincare and cosmetic containers

Upcycling bottles, jars, paper tubes

First try to get refills of your products so the original container lives on. Afterward remove the label from glass using rubbing alcohol, sterilize and use for countless things. The possibilities are endless.
Glass Jar:
  • Terrarium
  • DIY skincare ingredients
  • snacks
  • organize craft materials
  • store tea or spices

Glass Bottle:

  • portable water spray
  • a vase
  • DIY bath oil blends

Glass Vile:

  • row of vases
  • travel size toiletries
  • store sand from fave beach

Paperboard tubes (sanitize first)

  • plant seeds
  • use it as a little gift box
  • battery candle holder

Have fun upcycling! You’ll love the feeling of helping the planet.

What are Buttersuckles?

March 25, 2021

Our founder loves honeysuckles and buttercups. That's how we got our name, "H. Honeycup". Wait, our name could have been buttersuckles!

We like that it sounds fresh and fun, like an outdoor adventure. Our name comes from nature and so do our ingredients. Plant-based just feels right.

It turns out that creating natural and organic skin care products is as much fun as using them. How many samples do we try before we select our final product? Too many to count!
